GERMAN-DANISH YEAR OF FRIENDSHIP ARCHITECTURE TO (GET IN) TOUCH

ARCHITECTS – from GERMANY & DENMARK

Architects from Denmark and Germany present themselves together to a broad public: TO GET IN TOUCH WITH ARCHITECTS. How do architects think? What values, what ideas play a role in their projects? Architecture is built for people. It creates proximity and encounter. We ask this question on this day and want to experience live architecture and its architects in exchange, together in Aarhus in the legendary DOKK1 - the space for change.

ARCHITECTURE TO GET IN TOUCH

Architecture to (get in) Touch brings architecture very close to the people of Aarhus. Danish and German internationally active architectural firms are on site for exchange and for direct conversation. They give unknown insights into their work and answer questions, because architecture is the living space for people and their community. It's about architecture and design, knowledge and language, transformation and participation. At this event, Danish and German architects will jointly provide answers to questions on site and present their ideas of a better world through architecture! Architecture to (get in) Touch is organized by the MSAO Future Foundation together with the Cultural Society in Aarhus as part of the German Danish Year of Friendship and is free to visit.

PROGRAM

"An architecture Sunday full of inspiration – space for and with people"

Greeting from Klaus Schäfer, the German Honorary Consul in Aarhus

Building homes, building public spaces, building bridges--architecture is about bringing people together, just like the German-Danish Friendship-Event Architecture to (get in) Touch. It’s about imagining spaces that foster communication and create connections as well as relations between people and communities on many different levels.

We're not all expert builders, but we know what it means to spend our days in built spaces. We've experienced buildings that inspire us and work for us, individually and collectively, whether it’s personal living spaces or schools, libraries, hospitals, infrastructures, office and production spaces. Architecture is an act of creative understanding: of attending to a specific site, of listening to its community, the needs and dreams of people. Architects bring insight, expertise and vision to projects that shape our built environment for generations to come.

We hope that this kind of dynamic interaction between experts and the public will also be taking place during the Architecture to (get in) Touch event at Dokk1, itself a landmark of innovative design. Thanks to the fruitful collaboration between the MSAO Future Foundation and the Kulturgesellschaft in Aarhus, this unique event will bring together Danish and German architects with local experts and citizens, all of us listening to each other, sharing and discussing our understanding of community-driven architectures today.

Wishing us an inspiring exchange of ideas for building a better world,
Klaus Schäfer
Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany for the Central Jutland region of Denmark

Greeting from Joachim Hoof, the Danish Honorary Consul in Dresden

Libraries make me curious. Dresden, the city where I live, is home to several of these knowledge repositories. They are great functional buildings with their very own architecture. Interesting examples of such visionary but also realised buildings can be found in the recently published book Libraries and Their Architecture in the 21st Century by Ines Miersch- Süß.

In this book, libraries are impressively presented as living buildings that, in addition to their preservation function, are first and foremost places of communication and collective togetherness. I find Achim Bonte's comparison of the library with a living kitchen extremely exciting: a public kitchen in the city where everyone is welcome to join in the cooking, contribute their own ingredients and sit together at a large table. Transferred to the library, this means: low-threshold access to knowledge, educational equality and social participation. The users become participants - the architecture becomes a so-called "third place". It's good that there are such spaces and opportunities for exchange! Because we have to think ahead: How do we want to shape our future, how do we want to live together in the 21st century? Democracy and social coexistence must be constantly renegotiated - between neighbours, between generations, between cultures. Space is needed for this exchange.

Creating spaces and podiums for cultural, professional and social exchange - This is also made possible by the continuation of the Danish-German Year of Friendship 2021 and the thematically linked event Architecture to (get in) Touch of the MSAO Future Foundation. Aptly titled "Space for and with people", this event is sure to offer new insights, plenty of space for exchange, professional discourse and new ideas for visionary projects. I wish you every success in this endeavour!

WHAT I ALLWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT...

Talk between the Danish & German Architects

In three questions, a German architect learns from a Danish architect and vice versa what architecture and design, language and knowledge, transformation and participation mean to them and what role they play in their work. We experience architecture from the Danish and German perspectives.

Questions from the audience

The audience asks their questions. Any question is a good question. What moves people about architecture when they work and live in it? What expectations do people have of architects? Put your question on the podium, take a seat next to an architect and find out what you always wanted to know!

"Unpacking my Library" Andrew Kiel I Sauerbruch Hutton

Discussing projects for libraries, the office library, office publications, and his own love of book collecting, Andrew Kiel reveals the complex role of books in Sauerbruch Hutton's architectural practice. Creating a collection of books always sharpens focus and reflects the values of the "users," be they the institutions, offices, individual collectors, or the public realm creating the "demand" which public libraries meet. The printed content – as well as the graphic, physical, and haptic qualities of books – can inform and even strongly influence the conception, reception and communication of architectural practice.
